Artist Statement on Sleeping Marbles:

In this new work I aim to take the immaterial world of the subconscious and carve it into stone.

My process begins by preparing panels with jute and gesso and making drawings on these. Next I apply plaster to select areas. I like to consider the decision making of where to add extra dimension as an extension of the drawing process. These decisions can be used to create complexity, resolve aesthetic problems and compositional puzzles.

The finished low relief style painting may look like it was carved out of stone, a quality which can offer a more solid and visceral way of encapsulating a thought or feeling, giving a louder voice to a small wispy drawing.

Robin Fry has been developing his abstract figurative painting practice for over two decades. He studied art at Emily Carr University of Art and Design and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Born in Halifax he has lived and worked in Vancouver, Toronto and Berlin.

Informed by European modernism, vintage graphic art and various aspects of the everyday he is continuously exploring technique and experimenting with material while delving into the darker regions of the psyche.

He has had solo exhibitions with Helen Pitt Gallery (Vancouver), Paul Petro (Toronto) and Hiromart Gallery (Tokyo) and recently his work was included in curatorial projects at soon.tw (Montreal), Peanuts Gallery (Vancouver), Weird Things (Toronto) and Loyal Gallery (Stockholm).
