Robin Fry - Paintings

Hiromart Gallery is pleased to present Robin Fry’s solo exhibition titled Mirrored, which features new works.

Robin Fry returns to Tokyo for his solo show following his favorably received exhibition held in 2019. In this group of works, he attempts direct observation of still life arrangement rendered into abstract figurative painting using graphite and gouache. Furthermore, “I spend a lot of time thinking about color and the different effects it can have from optical to emotive,” said Fry.

Artist Statement on Mirrored:

These recent paintings are made with graphite and gouache on canvas. I treat the drawing and painting with equal importance. I like working this way because it allows for an intuitive and uninhibited development of the composition.

I have used two different image-generating methods with these paintings. One begins with direct observation of prepared still life arrangements using potted plants, various objects and carefully placed mirrors. These are arranged in a way that from my viewing spot can be seen as a landscape. As the painting develops I allow myself to spend less time depicting what I see and instead I react to the painting in its current state with abstraction, a figurative introduction or further elaborations on the impossible landscape. The second method is like a mirror image of the first. I begin with an automatic drawing and develop the painting from there. After going through various stages at some point I will prepare a still life to be incorporated into the unfinished painting. This way of working backwards expands my creative options while still remaining within the constraints I have set.

I hope these works have viewing longevity and that new meaning and feelings may emerge with the passing of time.

Robin Fry has been developing his abstract figurative painting practice for over two decades.

He studied art at Emily Carr University of Art and

Design and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Born in Halifax he has lived and worked in Vancouver, Toronto and Berlin.

Informed by modernist painting and graphic art he is continuously exploring technique and experimenting with material while delving into the subconscious.

His works are exhibited both internationally and locally at various galleries through solo, two person, and group exhibitions since 1999, such as a group show at Loyal Gallery (Stockholm), solo shows at Paul Petro Contemporary Art (Toronto), and Hiromart Gallery (Tokyo).
