It must Be Leaves

Josephine Rossing

Hiromart Gallery is pleased to present Tokyo-based Swedish artist Josephine Rossing’s debut solo exhibition with us, entitled It must Be Leaves.

Josephine Rossing’s source of inspiration comes from images from her life experiences, places, and things she has experienced and seen. She depicts those images from her memories, adding light, sounds, and colors. By doing this she produces alternative images based on actual images.

The show features new works especially made for this show, and a large drawing produced in 2019. This group of new work started with oil monotype, and then painted over it to finish the piece, so the painting has brush strokes.

Artist Statement:

Nothing excites me more than the blank canvas in my studio.

It’s where I can organize my thoughts; memories of lights, sounds, space, and colors. Uninterrupted by the distractions from outside, inside my studio I like to think I can stir the acutely limited views of beauty from less appreciated places, and the space in between.

My most recent work with graphite features fragile, decomposable, and monotone art. Like a shodō artist swings enormous brush over paper, I draw calculated lines onto my paper where there are no redo’s. This way, the art feels naked and exposed.

Nothing scares me more than the blank canvas staring back at me in my studio.
