Artist Statement:

This body of work was produced during the quarantine in early 2020. The work on paper is an attempt to make abstract self-portraits that deal with current changes in intimate moments of living in confinement of small spaces. The visual intensity of self portraits, intimate relationships with familiar objects, and the unrelenting news feed speaks of sensory deprivation, change, uncertainty, vulnerability and optimism/pessimism and yet hopeful of the newfound.

For the last two decades my studio practice has been working with paper in all different forms. The process to best express my raw emotions, contradictions and news feed of the present moment is through multi layers of color and forms by organizing geometric shapes, control and uncontrollable drip, as well as, aggressive marks. Then, the pessimism and aggressive emotions slowly vanish and I slowly reach a meditative state of mind in the repetitiveness.

Zdravko Toic moved to the United States from former Yugoslavia (now Croatia) as an adolescent and spent a large part of his formative years in New York City. His artistic career began studying abstract expressionism with Pat Passlof and Milton Resnick (studio study). He continued his education at American University where he met art critic and art historian Barbara Rose and developed a lifetime friendship. He has exhibited nationally and internationally that included four shows at Hiromart Gallery, Tokyo, Japan, titled: “The Invisible“, “New work by Zdravko Toic“ , “Dangerous Whisper: um“ and “Disconnected Pattern“. He had two exhibitions at Space Debris Gallery, Istanbul, Turkey, preface written by Osman Can Yerebaka. His selected exhibitions included a group show at the Spring Break Art Show, art fair in New York City, titled “reConstruction” curated by Yulia Topchiy. Also, included in Ford Project group show, “The New York; New Generation” at the Palazzo della Penna, the Contemporary Art Museum in Perugia, Italy, curated by Barbara Rose. In addition, Toic has collaborated with choreographer Vladimir Anguelov from the Loudoun Ballet Company using paint in stage set design. Their piece entitled “Emergency Ballets“ debuted at American University Experimental Theater then continued on to the French Embassy in Washington D.C., Virginia, Geneva and Austria.
